ACC Recommends Key Vaccines for Adults With Heart Disease

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has released new guidance urging adults with cardiovascular disease to stay updated on vaccines for Covid-19, influenza, RSV, pneumonia, and shingles, among others.

People with heart disease face higher risks from respiratory infections, including hospitalisation and death. Vaccines can significantly reduce these risks, but only 30% of primary care physicians currently assess vaccination status during visits, studies show.

The ACC recommends an annual flu shot for all adults, pneumococcal vaccines for those 19 and older with heart disease, and seasonal Covid vaccines. RSV shots are advised for adults 75 and older, and for those aged 50–74 with heart disease. A shingles vaccine is also recommended for adults 50 and above, with evidence suggesting it may reduce stroke and heart attack risks.

Clinicians are encouraged to discuss vaccination as part of standard heart disease prevention and care.
