Aadhaar Authentication Crosses 221 Crore in August, Face Scans See Record Growth
New Delhi, Sep 4 — Aadhaar-based authentication continues to grow rapidly, with more than 221 crore transactions completed in August, according to new data from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This is over 10 percent higher than August 2024, showing how Aadhaar has become central to India’s expanding digital economy.
UIDAI said Aadhaar is playing an important role in two areas: making welfare delivery more effective and giving people the option to access different services easily through voluntary authentication.
One of the fastest-growing methods is face authentication, powered by AI technology. In August alone, 18.6 crore transactions were done through face scans, compared to just 6.04 crore in the same month last year. In total, more than 213 crore face authentications have been recorded so far.
On September 1, Aadhaar set a new single-day record with more than 1.5 crore face authentications, breaking the earlier record of 1.28 crore on August 1. The feature works on both Android and iOS phones, allowing people to confirm their identity quickly with just a scan.
UIDAI said that face authentication is not only secure but also convenient for citizens. More than 150 organizations—including government departments, banks, telecom operators, oil companies, and other service providers—are already using it to deliver services and benefits.
Alongside this, Aadhaar’s electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) service is also seeing heavy use. In August, 38.53 crore e-KYC transactions were carried out. This digital system helps banks, financial firms, and other industries verify customer identity faster, improving user experience and cutting down paperwork.
According to UIDAI, the steady rise in Aadhaar transactions shows how widely accepted the system has become across the country. By making services more secure and easier to access, Aadhaar is strengthening India’s push toward a more inclusive digital economy.
