WhatsApp Goes Down Again: Thousands in India Hit by Outage

New Delhi, Sept 8 – WhatsApp users across India were left frustrated on Monday as the popular messaging app suffered a major outage. Many couldn’t send messages, use WhatsApp Web, or upload status updates for several hours.

The problem started around 2:20 p.m., according to Downdetector, a website that tracks online service issues. More than 400 users reported trouble, with most saying they couldn’t connect to the server. Others had issues using WhatsApp on desktop or on their phones.

Downdetector only reports major problems when the number of complaints is much higher than normal.

As expected, social media quickly filled with reactions. One user joked about “aunties and uncles sending good morning gifs” being cut off. Others simply said, “#WhatsApp is down!” or asked if “WhatsApp Web [was] down too?” Some users even confirmed that the app wasn’t working for them either.

So far, WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has not shared any official reason for the outage.

This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has gone offline this year. A similar issue happened in April, when users couldn’t send messages or post updates for hours. Back then, 81% of reports were about message-sending problems.

In February, WhatsApp also faced a bigger global outage. Users couldn’t access the app, send messages, or make calls through WhatsApp Web or mobile. On that day, Downdetector received more than 9,000 reports.

While Monday’s outage wasn’t as large, it still left many people confused and annoyed — especially those who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication.
