Laos, Cambodia Unite to Fight Drug Crimes

Officials from Laos and Cambodia met in Vientiane for their first joint meeting to improve cooperation against transnational crime, especially drug trafficking.

The meeting on Tuesday brought together senior prosecutors from both countries, according to Lao News Agency.

Xaysana Khotphouthone, President of Laos’ Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office, said this meeting is an important step to strengthen judicial cooperation. It shows the strong partnership between Laos and Cambodia and aims to improve their joint efforts in fighting drug-related and other transnational crimes.

Xaysana explained that the drug crisis is harming all parts of Lao society, from students to rural communities. He warned that if it is not controlled, it could lead to more crimes and threaten national stability.

To address this, the Lao government has declared drug control as a national priority. They have introduced stricter policies and better law enforcement. In 2024, Laos recorded 5,012 drug-related cases. In the first five months of 2025 alone, there have already been 1,422 cases.

During the meeting, both countries agreed to increase cross-border coordination, share more information, and run joint training programs to improve their fight against drugs.

On June 26, Laos marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by burning seized drugs. The ceremony showed Laos’ commitment to fighting drug abuse, which affects its economy, culture, and society.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong, and other senior officials.

Drug abuse remains a big problem in Laos, and the government is prioritising it with better prevention, law enforcement, and cooperation with neighbours like Cambodia.
