Airbnb Boosted India’s Economy by ₹113 Billion in 2024, Says Report

Airbnb played a major role in boosting India’s economy in 2024, contributing ₹113 billion and supporting over 1.1 lakh (111,000) jobs, according to a new report by Oxford Economics.

The report highlights how Airbnb has helped grow India’s tourism industry — not just through travel and accommodation, but by supporting related sectors like transport, food, and manufacturing. Of the total job impact, 38,000 jobs were in transport and storage19,600 in food services16,800 in retail, and 10,700 in manufacturing. It also contributed ₹24 billion in wages.

One of the key drivers of this growth was the rise in domestic travel. In 2024, 91% of Airbnb guests in India were domestic travellers, up from 79% in 2019. This shows that more Indians are exploring the country, especially younger travellers who are choosing flexible and affordable options like Airbnb.

International guests still played a role, with most visitors coming from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

In total, Airbnb guests spent ₹112 billion in India in 2024, including spending on places to stay and other local experiences.

Airbnb’s activities also made up 0.5% of India’s total travel and tourism GDP, and 0.2% of tourism-related jobs — that’s about one in every 417 tourism jobs in the country.

Besides tourism, Airbnb’s impact stretched to other sectors, contributing ₹31 billion to transport and storage, ₹15 billion to agriculture, ₹13 billion to real estate, and ₹12 billion to manufacturing.

Experts say this shows the strength of domestic tourism in India — from big cities to small towns. However, there’s still a big opportunity to grow international tourism, and platforms like Airbnb could help by attracting more global travellers.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s India and Southeast Asia head, said the findings prove how domestic travel is fueling small businesses and local entrepreneurs across the country.
