China Strikes Back: Limits EU Medical Device Imports in Government Projects

Starting July 6, 2025, China will restrict EU-made medical devices in its government procurement projects, in response to similar restrictions by the European Union.

If a government purchase exceeds 45 million yuan (~$6.29 million), EU companies (outside China) will be excluded unless there’s a special need for EU products. Non-EU companies can use no more than 50% EU-made devices in such projects.

China’s Finance Ministry says the move is a response to the EU’s June 20 restrictions on Chinese firms in EU medical procurement. China says it tried to resolve the issue through dialogue, but was left with no choice but to retaliate to protect Chinese firms.

EU-funded companies operating inside China are not affected by this policy
