India and Singapore Deepen Ties as PM Lawrence Wong Meets Indian Leaders in New Delhi
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong visited New Delhi this week for a three-day official trip, marking his first visit to India since taking office. His meetings with Indian leaders focused on strengthening cooperation across trade, education, healthcare, defence, and regional stability.
Wong began his visit by meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House. The two leaders discussed expanding ties in trade and investment, advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, healthcare, sustainability, and cultural exchanges. They also exchanged views on global and regional security challenges. The leaders adopted a new Roadmap for the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, setting long-term goals for deeper collaboration.
As part of the visit, PM Modi and Wong jointly inaugurated the Phase-2 development of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai. Built with Singapore’s partnership, BMCT has become India’s largest single container terminal, making JNP the biggest container port in the country.
Singapore’s Prime Minister also met India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, where they spoke about the impact of current geopolitical changes on regional and global stability. “There is a lot that India and Singapore can do together to contribute to growth and stability in the region,” Wong later shared on social media.
Beyond security and trade, education and skills development were also highlighted. Wong met Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in these areas, calling them a key pillar of the partnership. He also held discussions with Health Minister JP Nadda and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on healthcare and financial cooperation.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met Wong, expressing confidence that ties between India and Singapore would continue to grow stronger following this visit.
Wong, accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation, underscored Singapore’s commitment to working closely with India in building a stronger strategic and economic relationship. His trip is seen as a significant step in reinforcing the close ties between the two nations.
