Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Ready by 2029

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, also known as the bullet train, is expected to be fully completed by December 2029. The Gujarat section, from Vapi to Sabarmati, is planned to be finished earlier, by December 2027, according to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The minister said the project is very complex and involves advanced technology. Final timelines depend on completing all major works like track laying, civil structures, electrification, signaling, communication, and delivery of trainsets.

The 508-kilometre high-speed rail line is being built with help from the Japanese government. It will pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. There will be 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

By June 30, 2025, around ₹78,839 crore had already been spent. The full cost of the project is estimated at ₹1.08 lakh crore. Japan’s Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding 81% (about ₹88,000 crore). The rest—₹20,000 crore—will come from the Indian Railways and the state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Earlier delays in land acquisition in Maharashtra slowed down progress until 2021. But now, all 1,389.5 hectares of land have been acquired. Final location surveys and soil tests are done, and all necessary clearances for forest, wildlife, and coastal zones have been approved. All civil work contracts have also been awarded.

So far, 392 km of piers, 329 km of girder casting, and 308 km of girder launching have been completed. Work has also begun on a 21-km undersea tunnel.

To meet growing travel needs between major cities, new high-speed rail corridors are being planned. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being prepared by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).

Future bullet train projects will depend on technical, financial, and passenger demand studies. The ticket prices for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line will be kept affordable to attract more passengers.
