Joe Root says England will build on the aggressive “Bazball” approach rather than replace it as he begins his second spell as Test captain ahead of the Pakistan series starting August 19.
Root will work with interim coach Marcus Trescothick before newly appointed Test coach Stephen Fleming joins for the South Africa series later this year. He said Fleming’s vision for the team was a major factor in accepting the captaincy again.
The veteran batter believes England should retain the fearless mindset developed under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, while becoming tactically sharper in key moments. He said the team needs to improve its game management without abandoning the positive style that has transformed its approach over the past four years.
Root described the previous era as the most enjoyable period of his career, crediting it with changing his outlook and allowing players to perform with greater freedom and confidence.
Looking ahead to the Pakistan series, he acknowledged the challenge of a short preparation after The Hundred but stressed that clear roles and complete commitment from the squad would be essential. Root said England has the talent to achieve success if players fully embrace the team’s plans and maintain a balance between attacking cricket and smarter decision-making.
