French President Emmanuel Macron praised firefighters, security personnel, and other workers responding to widespread wildfires across France. He said national resources, including aircraft, helicopters, and additional emergency teams, have been deployed to contain the blazes.
Macron also thanked several European countries, including Romania, Germany, Portugal, and others, for providing support, calling the assistance a sign of European solidarity. He expressed support for Spain, Italy, Greece, and other nations affected by wildfires.
The fires have caused major destruction in regions including Gironde, Landes, Var, and parts of southern France, damaging homes and disrupting communities. Macron said the country would continue recovery efforts.
French authorities reported that around 98,000 hectares have been burned in 2026, marking a record level of wildfire damage. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said some fires remain uncontrolled, while evacuations have affected thousands of residents, including about 167,000 people in the Gironde area.
