Digi Yatra Crosses 15 Million Downloads, Set to Transform Air Travel in India

India’s Biometric Airport App Digi Yatra Hits 15 Million Downloads and Plans Big Expansion

Digi Yatra, India’s digital travel platform, has now crossed 15 million app downloads, showing how quickly travelers are adopting this biometric-based airport system. The platform uses facial recognition to make airport journeys smoother, faster, and contactless.

The app was launched in December 2022 and has already handled over 60 million digital journeys at 24 airports across India. With about 30,000 downloads per day, Digi Yatra is expected to reach 16.5 million users by August 2025.

The system is built on self-sovereign identity (SSI), which means that passengers control their own data. It uses facial authentication to help travelers move through airports without showing ID or boarding passes at multiple checkpoints. This helps reduce wait times and improves the overall airport experience.

Currently, 30–35% of domestic air travelers in India use Digi Yatra, but the goal is to reach 80% by 2028. The platform is also working with airlines and travel agencies to make boarding pass sharing automatic and simple.

Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, said, “Hitting the 15 million mark shows the trust passengers have in Digi Yatra. In 2024, our campaigns like d-KYC and expansion into smaller cities helped us reach more people.”

The app is now being expanded to four new airports: Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, and Srinagar. This will help even more passengers enjoy contactless travel.

To make the app more user-friendly, Digi Yatra will soon support all 22 official Indian languages, allowing travelers to use the app in their own language.

The next big upgrade, Digi Yatra 2.0, is already in testing. It will bring new features and support for international travel, once approved by the authorities.

Digi Yatra is also working with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) under the One-ID X Digi Yatra program. This partnership will help the app meet global travel standards, making it easier for Indian passengers to travel abroad with the same seamless experience.
