From Elephant Boy to Hollywood: Sabu’s Life to Hit the Big Screen
Mumbai, July 16 – The inspiring true story of Sabu Dastagir, India’s first Hollywood star, is set to become a film. Almighty Motion Picture has acquired the screen rights to Sabu: The Remarkable Story of India’s First Actor in Hollywood, a biography by Debleena Majumdar.
Sabu, born in 1924 in Mysore, went from working in elephant stables to starring in international films like Elephant Boy, The Thief of Bagdad, and Jungle Book. He also served in World War II as an air gunner and earned a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame before his untimely death at 39.
Producer Prabhleen Sandhu called the film a tribute to a forgotten legend who bridged cultures and continents. Majumdar said the story reflects not just Sabu’s journey, but also the evolution of cinema through key global moments.
