Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay Qualify for World Cup 2026 as Messi Shines in Argentina Farewell
New Delhi, Sep 5 – Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay have officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic night in the South American qualifiers. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi gave fans a night to remember in what may have been his final competitive match on home soil, and Brazil’s young star Estevao stole the show at the Maracana.
In Colombia, fans celebrated as their team beat Bolivia 3-0, securing a return to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition. James Rodríguez scored first, becoming Colombia’s top scorer in World Cup qualifying matches. Jhon Duran and Juan Quintero added two more to seal the win.
Uruguay also confirmed their spot with a 3-0 victory over Peru. Rodrigo Aguirre scored early and assisted Giorgian De Arrascaeta, who ran the game and netted the second. Federico Vinas scored the third, ending Peru’s World Cup hopes.
Paraguay qualified for the first time in 16 years, despite a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. Coach Gustavo Alfaro’s team relied on strong defense, keeping their sixth clean sheet under his leadership.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 in front of a roaring home crowd. Messi scored twice, with Lautaro Martinez adding another. It was an emotional night, likely marking Messi’s last home game for Argentina in a competitive match. His two goals brought him level with Cristiano Ronaldo for the second-most goals in World Cup qualifying history (36).
Venezuela now face pressure from Bolivia, who are just one point behind, in the race for the intercontinental play-off spot.
In Brazil, 18-year-old Estevao made a stunning debut at the iconic Maracana Stadium. He scored the opening goal in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Chile, followed by strikes from Lucas Paquetá and Bruno Guimaraes. The Selecao once again showed why they are strong contenders for the 2026 World Cup.
It was a night of celebration, legends, and rising stars across South America as the road to World Cup 2026 heats up.
